Japanese children’s ability to represent causality and intentionality was investigated for sequencing and narrating picture stories. The accuracy of three-, four- and five-year-old children differed significantly for the sequencing of pictures into complete stories. Their use of language to depict the causality of events also showed a similar trend. However, five-year-olds language use for depicting intentionality was still limited and there were only small group differences between four and five-year-olds. Their representations of causality and intentionality predicted theory of mind understanding after controlling for age, receptive language and executive functions. These findings are discussed in relation to the extent to which language plays a role in the development of theory of mind. |
