Scatterer size estimation is one of quantitative ultrasonic methods for diagnosing fatty liver disease. In this method, the frequency characteristic of the power spectrum of echo signals depending on the scatterer size is analyzed. However, it is necessary to choose an appropriate theoretical model considering some conditions of the medium. In this report, excised five normal and fatty livers of rats were measured, and backscatter coefficient and scatterer size were estimated by applying spherical Gaussian model(SGM), fluid sphere model(FSM), and structure factor model(SFM). SGM and FSM can be applied to backscatter in sparse random media. SFM can be applied in densely packed media to consider the interference effects caused by the correlations among scatterer positions. With SGM, estimated scatterer size was 42.42±1.71 $mu$m in normal liver, 22.18±2.03 $mu$m in fatty liver. With FSM, scatterer size was 33.74±1.49 $mu$m in normal liver, 22.26±1.15 $mu$m in fatty liver. With SFM, scatterer size was 35.74±1.14 $mu$m in normal liver, 33.17±0.20 $mu$m in fatty liver. It was indicated that the interference effects should be considered particularly in case of evaluation of fatty liver using 15-MHz ultrasound. |
