A Study on Phase Noise Variance Estimation and Approximated LLR for Single Carrier Transmissions

(in English) This paper proposes a novel phase noise variance estimation method using preamble sequence and high reliability log likelihood ratio (LLR) on the basis of non-Gaussian distributed equalizer outputs including phase noise for single carrier millimeter-wave (mmW) transmission systems. In mmW systems, phase noise on carrier wave signals in very high frequency bands causes severe performance degradation. In order to mitigate the impairments of phase noise, forward error correction (FEC) techniques with reliable LLR calculated on the basis of non-Gaussian distributed equalizer output including phase noise are effective. However, if the variance of phase noise cannot be captured accurately, the decoding capability is deteriorated. Fortunately, the impact of phase noise on channel estimation can be ignored owing to long preamble sequence. Therefore, the phase noise variance can be accurately estimated from the preamble sequence equalized by the estimated channel state information (CSI). This paper validates the proposed phase noise estimation method by computer simulations, and confirms that the approximated LLR with estimated phase noise variance is capable of improving bit error rate (BER) performance in the presence of phase noise.
