Influence of Underlayer Material on the Surface and the Crystallographic Qualities of L10-FePt Alloy Thin Film

(in English) In order to apply FePt alloy thin film with L10 structure to magnetic recording media, etc., it is required to control the film surface flatness. However, the surface of L10-ordered FePt film is generally rough because of clustering of deposited atoms on the substrate surface at high-deposition temperatures. As the surface morphology of epitaxial film is influenced by difference in the surface energy of substrate and film materials, it is useful to investigate the effect of surface energy difference on the surface flatness of L10-ordered FePt film. In the present study, FePt films of 10 nm thickness are deposited on MgO, VC, and, VN underlayers of 2 nm thickness which are prepared on SrTiO3(001) single-crystal substrates at 600 °C. The influence of surface energy of underlayer on the structure of FePt film is investigated. The results indicate that an employment of underlayer material of VN or VC which has a surface energy higher than that of MgO is effective in the preparation of L10-ordered FePt film with flatter surface.
