Unconscious deep-brain functional mechanisms for explaining perception of sounds

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Speech synthesis generating voices as people can easily understand plays a primary part in computer systems with vocal man-machine interfaces. It is essential for improving this technology to elicit underlying neural mechanisms how we extract semantic information from voices. The current study performed cognitive tasks using human voices and pure sounds. We found that vocal stimuli in a frequency range of below 5,000 Hz produced synchronous deep-brain activity (DBA) deactivation. We also found that pure sounds provided similar aspects exhibiting P200 with shorter latencies and decreasing DBA in the same frequencies. These findings indicate that we intrinsically have an unconscious neural circuit for semantic processing on voices.
