When textile antennas are embedded into the clothes, the sewing pattern of radiating elements affects the plasticity, flexibility and texture of the embroidered antenna as well as the radiation characteristics of the antenna. Embroidered antennas are commonly fabricated by using flexible conductive yarns whose conductivities are
smaller than that of copper wires. In assessing the radiation efficiency of embroidered conductive yarn wearable
antennas, which are commonly used in the vicinity of a human body, it is important to assess the following two
types of loss: 1) The loss caused by a human body, and 2) The loss caused by a conductive yarn. Previous studies
show that the simplest modification using lower conductivity for the radiating element during the FDTD simulation
cannot explain the measurement results. This paper proposes a modified simulation method for the embroidered wideband oval slot antennas in order to predict the radiation efficiencies of the antennas with the FDTD simulation. The measured results for the radiation efficiencies of several wideband oval slot antennas, which have different sewing patterns, agree well with the simulated results by using two different conductivities for the radiating element based on the sewing direction in the embroidered structures. |
