[Poster Presentation] Experimental Study on Availability of Active RFID for Diminutive Fish Monitoring in Creeks

(in English) Telemetry and bio-logging systems are generally employing radio wave or sound transmitters and receivers to monitor ambulation and behavior of animals or fish. Most of them, however, are used for large-sized fish, but not suitable for smaller one, especially in creeks. We take notice of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technologies and examined a passive RFID type operating by electromagnetic induction and an active RFID type by radio waves. The former has been used for fish monitoring while the working distance between a receiver and a tag is about 10 cm. The later can be used to detect the tags in long distance, but the radio wave should not be an effective method of monitoring fish due to attenuation in water generally. In this paper, we examine and discuss the availability of active RFID tags in creeks based on experiments.
