[Encouragement Talk] Formulation of Energy Budget and Investigation of Optimal Forwarding Angle for Progress-Based Nearest Forwarding Policy in Wireless Sensor Networks

(in English) A number of battery-driven sensor nodes are deployed to operate a wireless sensor network, and many routing protocols have been proposed to reduce energy consumption for data communications in the networks. In light of this fact, if it can be known how much energy consumption will be required for sensor nodes to operate a network before deploying the nodes, it will help the insight into the energy-efficient network topology. Therefore, this report considers the network topology which employs a nearest-neighbor routing policy based on hop progress, and defines the forwarding angle as an index to parameterize the topology. We further formulate the energy budget for networks by means of stochastic-geometric analysis. Both analytical and simulation results clarify that the optimal forwarding angle which yields the most energy efficiency for the routing policy is dependent on the node density in the network. Evaluation results also demonstrate that the analytically derived values can approximate the energy budget, with a smaller error for networks consisting of a larger number of nodes.
