Tactile sensing using hetero-core optical fiber SPR sensors was proposed for equipping a function of liquid detection with robotics. However general multi-mode optical fibers conventionally used as transmission lines are somewhat affected by bend loss. Accordingly, in order to exactly detect liquids without a disturbance of bend loss, an improved sensor was developed by applying bend-insensitive multi-mode optical fibers as transmission lines. In this paper, the ability of the proposed sensor was evaluated in terms both of liquid detection property and bend insensitivity. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed sensor using a bend-insensitive fiber was able to reduce bend loss and SPR resonance wavelength shift caused by bending transmission lines. |
