Suppression of Pathological Synchronization in Cortical Networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In cortical networks, it has been known that neurons generate self-sustained low-frequency firings even in the absence of sensory stimulus inputs. The so-called “spontaneous activity” typically gives rise to irregular and asynchronous firing among the cortical neurons. Despite numerous theoretical attempts, the main mechanism that underlies the spontaneous firing activity remained unclear. A breakthrough has been recently made by Teramae et al. (2012), who proposed a neuronal network model, in which EPSPs (excitatory postsynaptic potentials) obey a lognormal distribution. The modeling study showed that the lognormal distribution of EPSPs in cortical networks was the key to sustain low-frequency firings of the neurons. Although their model mainly focused on the lognormal distribution of the EPSPs, correlation of the EPSPs observed between bidirectionally coupled neurons has been disregarded. In our study, we add correlated EPSPs to the lognormal network and show that the correlated EPSPs cause synchronized firing among the neurons. Moreover, extremely high firing frequencies are also observed in a group of neurons. We then show that introduction of heterogeneity to inhibitory connections suppresses such pathological (synchronous and high-frequency) activity in both feed-forward and cortical network models. In particular, lognormal distribution with few but strong inhibitory connections works efficiently to reduce correlation of the synchronous firings.
