To clarify the origin of the superior field emission characteristics of carbon emitters, we have estimated the emission current by ab initio simulations. We adopted the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method for calculating the field emission from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hydrogen-terminated carbon nanotubes (H-CNTs). The previously raised problem that the slope of F-N plots is too small can be solved by using the trapezoidal electric field. Emission current from H-CNT calculated by TD-DFT is 5 times larger than that from CNT. However the emission current from H-CNT calculated by the Fowler-Nordheim equation is 18 times larger than CNT. We discuss the difference in obtained results. |
