Effects of the Difference in Modality on Syntactic Priming in Second Language Production of Japanese Learners of English
Mayu Hamada, Hirokazu Yokokawa (Kobe Univ.) TL2016-34
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A picture description task with spoken primes was conducted to investigate whether the differences of output modality (i.e., spoken or written) and verb (i.e., same or different) affect Japanese EFL learners’ syntactic priming. The results indicate that priming effect was observed in both modalities. Priming rates were higher with Prepositional-Object (PO) primes but were lower when learners focused their attention to contents in spoken production. Furthermore, Double-Object (DO) production increased in written production. Therefore, the results indicate that learners transited the knowledge of the structure from declaratives to procedural knowledge when they heard spoken forms, and the output modality differences had different effects on syntactic priming.
