Study on Control of Coagulation Size Induced by Bubble-Enhanced Ultrasound Heating Using Scattered Ultrasound Signal from Focal Region of Therapeutic Ultrasound

(in English) High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment is a noninvasive method of treatment in which ultrasound is generated by transducer set outside the body and focused on a target tissue such as a cancer inside the body to be thermally coagulated. Recent years, bubble-enhanced treatment is known to enhance the efficiency of treatment. Thermal dose of each HIFU exposure should be adjusted in real-time to enhance the safety and accuracy of this treatment. In this study, the therapeutic ultrasound scattered by the thermal region, potentially containing HIFU-induced bubbles, is regarded as a feedback element and therapeutic ultrasound duration time is controlled by detecting the change in such feedback element. The result suggests that the proposed method significantly improves the reproducibility of coagulation size.
