On Relationship between Transmit Power and Consumed Power in Bluetooth LE Devices
Kanji Takeda, Daisuke Umehara, Koichiro Wakasugi (Kyoto Inst. of Tech.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless sensor networks and IoT (Internet of Things) devices have been widespread.
High energy efficiency is required for the wireless communication schemes of such wireless sensor devices because they are generally battery-powered.
We should model the energy consumption of wireless sensor devices to develop energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols for such devices.
We conduct measurements to observe the current consumption of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices and present the measurement-based modeling where BLE has been attracting as an energy-efficient wireless access protocol.
The CC2541DK-MINI development kit produced by Texas Instruments is used for the measurements.
Electric current is observed for a BLE slave device while connected because the energy consumption by communications will be dominant.
The amount of change in transmit consumed current is shown due to the change of transmit power.
The developed current consumption model provides us to estimate the impact on battery life time by modifying the transmit power.
