Optimization of the retrieval order of statistics information in measuring packet loss rates of all links on OpenFlow

(in English) In recent years, OpenFlow has been attracting much attention as a network technology to support cloud computing and server virtualization.
Accordingly, in order to maintain a high quality of large-scale OpenFlow networks, active measurement-based real-time performance/status monitoring schemes have been studied. In our previous study, by utilizing the flexible flow routing/monitoring capability of OpenFlow, we proposed a framework to efficiently measure the packet loss rates on all links in both directions distinguishably. In the framework, a number of test packets are launched by a single measurement terminal so as to pass through every link only once; the number of test packets passing on an individual port is collected from all OpenFlow switches; and then the packet loss rate on each link is calculated by taking a difference. In this study, we improve the sequential order in which the flow statistics information are collected from OpenFlow switches. By using an appropriate order, we do not need to access all OpenFlow switches and can reduce a traffic load on the control-plain network and an access load on the switches. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme on large-scale networks through simulations. We also test a proto-type system in a nation-wide testbed OpenFlow network to experimentally validate the system.
