The Impact of Microbursts on Throughput of Virtual Switch

(in English) Virtual switch based on software is essential for SDN, NFV, and cloud network.Particularly, Open vSwitch (OVS) has been widely used to academic and industry.The virtual switch on server can be affected by tx/rx queuing and fluctuated resources, such as CPU.The microbursts where massive packets are burstly forwarded and large throughput in a moment is achieved can be occurred within server.Moreover, the number of packet drops would abruptly be increased by the impact of microbursts on network.However, previous studies only focused on the performance of virtual switch.In fact, it is unclear whether there will be the microbursts within the server and its impact with QoS properties.In this paper, we provide insights into a nature of the microbursts and the impact.We generated an UDP flow as foreground trafficand massive UDP flows as background traffic to occur resource contention at the server.The quantitative analysis results of the traffic are shown.We find the occurrence of microbursts, and it is a major cause of decreased throughput.
