The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a joint mission between USA and Japan to study tropical and subtropical rainfall for weather and climate research. The TRMM spacecraft was launched by a Japanese H-II rocket on November 28, 1997 and re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on June 15, 2015 which observed tropical and subtropical rainfall more than 17 years. TRMM installed the world's first spaceborne precipitation radar developed by Japan. TRMM’s observational data have been used by world’s meteorologists, climatologists, hydrologists and disaster prevention researchers. TRMM mission ended successfully. This paper aims at finding out causes of the success of the TRMM by looking back on the history of TRMM for the benefit of the younger generation researchers who are involved in satellite missions. |
