Recently, data traffic in 3G/LTE network has exploded owing to smart phone penetration. For mobile network congestion control, traffic off-load measures by using Wi-Fi system are widely applied. Especially, for a traffic off-load measure at a venue where many people gather, Softbank developed the 5.6 GHz band Space Division Multi-Channel Wi-Fi system. This Wi-Fi system divides a serving area into multiple spaces by employing directional antennas at an access point (AP), and each space is served by one access point and its corresponding high-gain antenna. Antennas of adjacent spaces use different radio frequencies from each other. Radio interference is reduced, and channel utilization is increased. In order to achieve a highly effective traffic off-load measure at a venue where many people gather, this Wi-Fi system implements user concentration avoidance and radio terminal shut-down functions. This paper describes the Wi-Fi system, and explains field experiment results. |
