Utilizing higher frequency bands above 10 GHz is now an important technical trend in 5G mobile systems and ultra-high speed WLANs. However, free space propagation loss is significantly increasing with frequency increase which limits communication range and determine the usage cases, the radio propagation channel properties in large variety of applications should be thoroughly investigated. This paper describes the technical trends of channel model development in high frequency bands both in 5G mobile and WLAN systems, and introduces the recent mm-wave channel model described in the IEEE 802.11ay standard. Finally, the measured channel characteristics and extracted parameters in outdoor open area hotspot scenario at a mm-wave band of 58.5 GHz will be briefly introduced. |
