We discuss the estimation of parameters contained in a quantum channel.
In the standard strategy, we send the quantum system prepared in a certain input state into the channel, and measure some observable in the output state.
We perform such an experiment many times to collect measurement data, from which we try to estimate the target parameter in the channel.
In this study, in contrast, we consider a different scheme for parameter estimation: we repeat the application of the channel followed by a measurement without resetting the state of the system every after the measurement.
We study such a sequential scheme for parameter estimation with an amplitude damping channel for a single qubit at a finite temperature, and show that, in contrast to the standard strategy based on independent and identical experiments, (i) the parameter can be estimated with an arbitrary initial state provided that the channel satisfies a certain criterion, (ii) the correlations among the collected data can be exploited to enhance the precision of the estimation, and (iii) the performance of the scheme is improved by increasing the temperature of the environment. |
