This paper focuses on 802.11 beacons which are preferred to the 802.15 (Zigbee) of even 802.11p (WAVE) stacks, both focusing on opportunistic/cognitive behavior. For this paper, beacons are the traditional Beacon Frames (or Request Reply) transmitted by commodity 802.11a-g,n,ac devices. The added feature is the random multichannel behavior, where the device transmits on a randomly selected channel while scanning for arriving frames on all the others. Packet collisions are allowed and are easily resolved by redundancy. This behavior is shown to be beneficial for dense wireless spaces where single-channel or coordinated multichannel technologies are crippled by acute congestion and/or excessive signalling overhead. |
