The electromagnetic wave absorption mechanism of electromagnetic wave absorbers which consisted of periodically arranged conductor pattern layer which operates as frequency selective surface, an absorption layer, and a short circuit layer on the back (pattern absorber) was investigated. The conductor pattern has the size adjusted so that the resonant frequency of resonator, which consists of both the electric and magnetic wall formed in the absorption layer, is the same as that of adsorbed electromagnetic wave. It was confirmed that both the absorption center frequency and the absorbing characteristics could be controlled by the design factors, such as the shape, the arrangement, the occupied area ratio of a conductor pattern, and the loss of absorption layer. The scaling law was found between pattern size and absorption center frequency, and the electromagnetic wave absorbers for millimeter wave band with the excellent absorbing characteristics were fabricated and evaluated using the scaling law. |
