UAVs for EW and EMS warfare
Yoshio Kajiwara (FUJITSU) SANE2016-4
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The largest application in military UAV applications is the ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance). The representative UAVs pursuing these missions include RQ-1(MQ-1) Predator. The type of this class proved its effectiveness and capability in the missions in Afghanistan and so on. At that time, however, the hostile air-defense system did not serve as threat, so most of the limited payload of UAV and the supplied power were allocated to ISR sensor, and the necessity of the self-defense implementation on board was barely discussed. On the other hand, in the DOD study on AEA (Airborne Electronic Attack) pursued in 2001, the integrated AEA architecture using unmanned vehicles was presented. After that, in the Air-Sea Battle concept against A2/AD (Anti-Access/Area Denial) threats, UAVs and RF decoys supporting fighter aircrafts penetrating into contested airspace defended with the modern IADS(Integrated airborne defense system) have been considered. In the “Low-to-No Power” scenario of the report “WINNING THE AIRWAVES” published by US think-tank CSBA in November 2015, the concept of Close-in EW using UAV and RF decoy is presented.
