When liquid is irradiated by strong ultrasound, many bubbles are created by acoustic cavitation. What is the life of the acoustic bubbles after stopping ultrasound? Relatively large bubbles move upward by buoyancy and disappear at the liquid surface. Relatively small bubbles, on the other hand, completely dissolve into the liquid before reaching the liquid surface. Some others would be stabilized by the attachment of impurities on their surfaces, which is called ultrafine bubbles. In the present study, numerical simulations of the complete dissolution of a relatively small air bubble into liquid water saturated with air are performed taking into account the effect of the inertia of the surrounding liquid. Surprisingly, the temperature and pressure inside a bubble increase up to 2500 K and 7 GPa, respectively at the final moment of the complete dissolution. However, there would be no radical formation because at the moment the bubble content is only nitrogen molecules and the temperature is lower than that required for the dissociation of nitrogen molecules. |
