Applying an electromagnetic theorem to solve the Border-Ownership assignment problem
Zaem Arif Zainal, Shunji Satoh (UEC) NC2015-88
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We discovered that the relationship between Border-Ownership (BO) assignment and order in depth of objects in occlusion can be expressed mathematically by using an electromagnetic theorem in its formulation. Based on our proposed analogy that (i) electric potential and its corresponding electric field is similar to order in depth and BO, respectively, we (ii) applied a theorem concerning conservative fields, which states that “the gradient of electric scalar potential is an electric vector field with zero curl (rotation),” to solve the BO assignment problem. Simulations showed that a simple model based on this computational theory was capable of solving problems involving occlusion and shape.
