A Method to Predict New Uses of Existing Drugs Using Machine Learning and to Evaluate Their Reliability
Kohei Adachi, Yutaka Fukuoka (Kogakuin Univ.) MBE2015-102
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study proposed a method to evaluate the reliability of predicting new uses of existing drugs. The predication was performed with a support vector machine (SVM) using various data. Because the reliability of prediction could not be evaluated based on a SVM, whose output was binary, this study evaluated the reliability as a product of a distance from the separating hyperplane of the SVM and a similarity between the target disease of the drug and a candidate disease. A validation using real data revealed that the performance of the proposed method was better than that of using the distance from the hyperplane, suggesting that the method is promising.
