The communication channel between a base-station transmitter and train mounted receiver suffers from rapid and deep fading due to the large Doppler spread at high speeds. In order to reduce this fading a linear array antenna has been proposed whose elements switch in the reverse direction of train motion. By matching the switching frequency to the trains speed the channel on the selected antennas are momentarily fixed to the same ground-point. A software model of the switching process is made in order to study the time-varying phase response. A scale-model experiment is conducted consisting of a linear track with train mounted array and, by appropriate scaling of the Tx symbol rate, virtual fading rates up to 360 km/h are created. A software simulation based on the WiMAX physical layer parameters is developed and performance is shown to improve by up to 1.7 dB at bit error rate (BER) 5E-3 at 360 km/h. |
