There has been a recent trend of studies which analyze the fundamental limit of achievable coding rates by allowing some error probability up to a given constant. In this paper, for channels with states, we treat with two error criteria based on the decoding error probability and the outage probability, and we introduce various definitions of the channel capacity (highest achievable coding rate). We consider cases where the channel state information is known or unknown to the decoder, and formulas for the capacity in the respective scenarios are stated. From these formula results, it is revealed that both capacities coincide when the channel state information is known to the decoder. In addition, for the mixed channel whose component channels are stationary and memoryless with a finite input alphabet and a general output alphabet, a single-letter characterization of the channel capacity is given. Finally, some recent results about the analysis on the second order coding rate are briefly reviewed. |
