A study on possibility of screen reconstruction by frequency analysis of electromagnetic emanation from mobile devices

(in English) There is the risk for mobile devices that its screen is monitored by attackers capturing electromagnetic emanation from it. Specifically, it is reported that emanated electromagnetic waves which enable screen reconstruction to have a special frequency component which corresponds to a horizontal synchronization frequency (we call it ‘drawing frequency’). However, the requirement of emanated electromagnetic waves is not found out clearly yet, because emanated electromagnetic waves which have its drawing frequency components can be not always used to its screen reconstruction. In this paper, we focus on frequency characteristics of AM demodulated signals of emanated electromagnetic waves, and analyze their electromagnetic characteristics experimentally.
In particular, we consider the difference of frequency characteristics between the wave with drawing frequency components which cannot be used to screen reconstruction and that of which enables screen reconstruction with AM demodulated signals of these waves from the same devices. As a result, it is observed that emanated electromagnetic waves which enable screen reconstruction to have drawing frequency components and its harmonic components. On the other hand, it is observed that those of which cannot be used to screen reconstruction contain significant noise components other than those components. Therefore, we confirmed the difference between the two waves in frequency characteristics of those AM demodulated signals.
