We are developing optical transport network systems that utilize time-division multiplexing in optical domain, for future cost-effective and power-efficient metro networks. Such systems can aggregate electrical processing onto network edges and eliminate buffer and header processing function from intermediate nodes. Traffic characteristics in metro networks strongly depend on country/region/area and there is large difference in traffic amount between urban and rural areas. Therefore, network architecture suitable for each area must be required for reducing the whole network cost/power consumption. This paper proposes transport network architecture appropriate for rural area, called Photonic Sub-Lambda transport network (PSL network). Moreover, key technologies for realizing PSL network are presented and fundamental evaluations of network cost and power consumption are provided. |
