Application of Yes/No Communication Aid for Patients with Impaired Consciousness

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) An Yes/No communication aid for totally locked-in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) patients was applied for patients with apparently impaired consciousness, in order to judge whether they were really unconscious or not. We used here two measures: one was the statistical significance of difference between averaged answer yes/no and the chance level 50 %, and the other was to check whether the averaged cerebral blood volume changes and the heart rate synchronized with tasks. The method was verified using healthy person’s data and was applied to an ALS patient with no electroenthephalogram response and to a person with brain contusion. The former was judged as the possibility of consciousness being left on the basis of the synchronization check, and in the latter, whether conscious or not was not determined.
