VM Placement Method Considering Processing Time and Power Consumption for Cloud Computing

(in English) In cloud computing, a limited amount of computing resources can be utilized effectively by placing multiple virtual machines on physical machines with the virtualization technology. In this case, it is expected that virtual machines are placed on physical machines by considering the performance and the power consumption of the physical machines. In this paper, we propose a VM placement method that considers the performance and the power consumption of physical machines. In this method, virtual machines are placed on a physical machine based on its CPU allocation rate. In addition, a physical machine is turned on and off based on its CPU allocation rate. The allocated virtual machine can be moved to another physical machine with live migration technology. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method with simulation and compare the performance of the proposed method with that of other methods. In numerical examples, we show that the proposed method is effective when the number of virtual machines is small. Moreover, we
show that the three thresholds affects the performance of the proposed method.
