Wireless Power Transfer-based Sensor Networks (WPT-SNs) are being actively studied in order to realize battery-less wireless sensor networks.
A WPT-SN consists of a sink that gathers sensing information and emits energy, and nodes that exploit the transfered energy for data communications.
However, nodes with the large distance to the sink have lower transfered energy due to larger propagation loss, which causes the required charging time for data communications to increase.
The larger charging time leads to higher energy consumption of the sink and lower network throughput.
In this paper, in order to decrease the charging time, we attempt to decrease the operating energy of each node by decreasing the transmission power of each data transmission.
The smaller transmission power can result in worse packet delivery rate, therefore, we propose cooperative relaying exploiting surplus energy of nodes located within close proximity of the sink.
The proposed scheme orders nodes according to their distances to the sink, and their transmissions are scheduled in such a way that nodes with larger distances transmit their data first.
The data is broadcasted, and nodes that have surplus energy and successfully overhear packets lost at the sink forward them upon request.
With computer simulations, we show that the proposed scheme can shorten the required charging time, i.e., the duration of power transfer to realize high packet collection rate in comparison to the direct transmission scheme without relaying. |
