In our system, a wearable assistive device was proposed to support the navigation of the blind people. The device is placed inside the mouth and instruct the blind individuals for finding the way by applying electrical stimulation on to the tongue. The antenna is placed within the mouth of a blind person and operates at 2.4 GHz for ZigBee protocol communication. As a result, the communication should be omnidirectional. However, because it is mounted near the brain, the direction of propagation should be to the forward direction and not in the direction toward the brain. Omnidirectional antennas have the advantage of wider coverage but they require more power and easily affected by neighbouring interferers compared with directional antennas. Consequently, a small relatively directional patch antenna at 2.4 GHz was designed, simulated and successfully fabricated. The antenna is dedicated to locate inside the mouth, the substrate should be flexible; therefore, the substrate Rogers 5880 (dielectric constant = 2.2) was used. |
