Control of light transmission through the Nematic liquid crystal using ultrasound

(in English) Nematic liquid crystals are widely used in optical devices such as liquid crystal displays. In this report, we propose a novel control technique of the orientation of nematic liquid crystals using ultrasound, and the optical characteristics were investigated. An ultrasonic liquid crystal cell was fabricated; a liquid crystal layer with the thickness of 5 to 25 m was sandwiched between two rectangular glass plates having two ultrasonic PZT transducers. By exciting the PZT transducers, the flexural vibration modes were generated on the liquid crystal cell. The acoustic radiation force to the liquid crystal layer was generated, and the molecular orientation was changed, resulting the drastic changes of the light transmission. The distributions of the transmitted light and the vibrational amplitude of the glass substrate were correlated. By changing the ultrasonic driving frequency and voltage, the spatial distribution of the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal could be controlled. The distribution of the transmitted light intensity depends on the thickness of the liquid crystal layer since the acoustic field in the liquid crystal layer is changed due to the orientational film.
