Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) To support Japanese prosody instruction, the Online Japanese Accent Dictionary (OJAD) has been developed by using NLP and SLP technologies and it is maintained by our laboratory. One of the functions of the OJAD is a prosodic reading tutor. For any input text, the tutor illustrates the hierarchical control of prosody in an easy-to-understand way, which is required to read the input text in Tokyo Japanese. Further, the tutor generates voices for the input text using a speech synthesizer based on the visualized prosody. In this article, by using Chinese learners of Japanese, it is experimentally verified that the tutor is effective to improve the naturalness of their spoken Japanese. Further, we examine experimentally which manner of prosody presentation to learners, visual or auditory, is more effective. Results show that higher effectiveness is observed in the former manner and, questionnaires posed to learners also indicate their preferences of visual prosody to auditory prosody.
