Fundamental Study on Ultrasonic Welding of Small Machine Components -- Investigation of shape of Welding Bead --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Ultrasonic welding method is a kind of metallurgical joining methods capable of joining metals in the solid state. Namely, both plastic flow of metal and friction by the ultrasonic vibration are operated simultaneously on the bonding surface, in which an oxide layer and a surface-adsorbed molecules layer are destroyed between the bonding surfaces. Thus, because the atoms of metals nearly contact each other, the both metals can be bonded in the solid state. Conventionally, the ultrasonic bonding method have been used to the bonding of various electrical terminals, such as terminals of electric wires of automobiles and internal electric wires of LSI (wire bonding). In contrast, this study aims at applying the ultrasonic bonding method to precision assembly of small metal parts.
In this paper, we study the shapes of welding bead under bonding of aluminum thin sheet metals and evaluate bonding situation such as bonded strength and structure of bonded layer. Ultrasonic vibration bonding equipment vibrates at a frequency of 20.1kHz and the maximum amplitude of 16.8μm (0-p). In the experiments, A6022-T4 sheet with a thickness of 1mm were joined. As a result, it is fundamentally demonstrated that the joining is possible, and the relationship between strength and the shape of the bead on the bonding surface.
