Since the glenohumeral joint is unstable due to less support of bones, its stability is believed to be reinforced by the coordinative activities of the shoulder muscles. Then their activities have been analyzed by means of computer simulation, using a musculoskeletal model of the shoulder, due to the difficulty of electro-myographic analysis. We also have been studied their activities during the elevation of the upper arm in the scapular plane, using a precise musculoskeletal model and a movement model, both of which were made from MRI images of subject's shoulder, as well as a muscle model. In this study, we estimated muscle activities during the abduction in the coronal plane as well as the scapular plane in order to clarify the difference in muscle activities between the two movements. Empirical results demonstrated that 1) during the abduction in the scapular plane, the infraspinatus and subscapularis muscles antagonized with each other were activated simultaneously, while the supraspinatus and the intermediate portion of deltoid worked dominantly for abduction; 2) during the abduction in the coronal plane, on the other hand, the activities of the infraspinatus increased relative to that of the subscapularis for horizontal abduction, while the activities of supraspinatus decreased probably due to the modification of its route, accordingly activating the intermediate portion of the deltoid further for compensation. |
