MR signal detection of hyperpolarized xenon with atomic magnetometers in ultra-low field based on SWIFT approach

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, ultra-low field MRI (ULF-MRI) has been attracting attention because of its advantages such as low maintenance cost. In ULF-MRI, however, there is a limitation that MR signals become very small in general. Hence, we have tried to visualize hyperpolarized xenon to detect MR signals than those of proton. In addition, MR signals of hyperpolarized xenon decay rapidly when a large gradient field is used in MR signal detection. Meanwhile, the sweep imaging with Fourier transformation (SWIFT) approach has been applied to reduce the decay caused by the diffusion of xenon gas. In this study, we employed an optically pumped atomic magnetometer (OPAM) with a flux transformer (FT) for remote detection of MR signals. In this system, we examined the constraints on the bandwidth of the MR signals measurement. In addition, we simulated signal acquisition and reconstruction from the MR signals in ULF-MRI obtained by the SWIFT approach when the bandwidth was changed. As a result, we could confirm that $T_2$ relaxation and narrow inter-pixel bandwidth contributes causes aliasing of the reconstructed image for imaging of hyperpolarized xenon with SWIFT approach in ULF-MRI.
