A Study of Local Distance Metric Learning and Classifying Method Based on the Local Distances

(in English) The distance metric learning is the approach which enables to acquire a good metric for automatic data classification. In this paper, we focus on the typical distance metric learning approach based on Large Margin Nearest Neighbor (LMNN). This approach learns a single metric matrix from the whole training data, so there is a problem that the single metric matrix cannot represent the difference of statistical characteristics between categories. In order to solve this problem, focusing on the category information of training data, we propose a new method of distance metric learning which learns plural metric matrices that reflect the statistical characteristics. In order to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method, we also propose the classification method based on the combination of the plural metric matrices.
