Transitory politeness effect in manipulated usages of "Futsuu-ni" in Japanese
Anju Ogata, Sachiko Shudo (Waseda Univ.) TL2015-48
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In Japan, the adverb "futsuu-ni" has recently been used to modify adjectives that express the speakers’ evaluation, such as ‘delicious’ or ‘pretty.’ Initially, the modification was positive, such that “futsuu-ni X” was considered to be "more so than merely X." However, the meaning has quickly degraded to mean "less than X." Using the results of a survey of 200 university students, we confirm the transformation of the meaning and also account for the phenomenon in terms of the transitoriness of politeness.
