In the last century, the human civilization due to electricity and quantum mechanics has achieved great advances. There are huge contribution to the GDP of economic activity due to the related techniques. Furthermore, for the last two decades, the power consumption of electricity due to network servers alone has increased 10%. All of these together contribute to the global warming today. Thus, the efficiency of WPT is expected to be another important influential factor to the power consumption and the human society, if the WPT technique is to replace the power cord.
Temporarily, the WPT technique still wait for a killer application scenario , such as the wireless charging for the smart phone. And It is widely believed that the successfulness of WPT would yield quite promising ways to improve life. On the other hand, there are still some issues need to be addressed to help reduce the concerns of the general public, such as the efficiency and/or the health issues.
Do we the general public really obtain benefit to replace the power cord by WPT--such as more efficiency being achieved? Could it be much more for the welfare of the handset corporations ? The latter surely would like to drive the general public to replace the old smart phone with the updated one with WPT for financial and/or supply-side economics purposes.
Before the efficiency issue is clarified, there are certain application areas of the WPT technique no doubt would benefit the general public: for example, one application is the space-based solar power (SBSP) to convey the solar energy from outer space down to the earth. Another example is the development of electric transport system for the public bus with "online" wireless charging. Besides, the energy harvest system by scavenging the energy of the surrounding RF energy and/or the thermal energy is another good example, which serves as a technique for self-sustainable IoT (internet of things) devices.
More issues will be addressed during the presentation. |
