A method for creating a strong structure has been developed, which changes from a two-dimensional (2-D) mode into a three-dimensional (3-D) mode when the two endpoints are pulled. The deformation is reversible and depends on the tension between the endpoints. By using this technique, we can build a spherical 3-D object such as a globe, which is generally difficult to make from sheet materials such as paper. This technique can be applied to various fields; educational materials, packaging, emergency tents, a portable large-scale projection system, and spacers for laparoscopic surgery. In this study, we propose to apply this technique to educate astronomy. |
