Field Experiments of Downlink NOMA with 2-by-2 Open-Loop SU-MIMO

(in English) This paper presents the experimental results of downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with Open-Loop Single-user (SU)-MIMO and successive interference canceller (SIC). In the evaluations, the frame structure is based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) Release 8 specifications and we apply 2-by-2 transmission and the number of multiplexed user equipment (UE) is two. And we clarify the performance of NOMA with codeword level SIC (CWIC) for the cell-center UE and the performance of the cell-edge UE, which does not apply SIC. Based on the indoor and outdoor experiments, we show that for cell-center UE the performance degradation due to error propagation associated with interference cancellation by CWIC receiver is not observed. And we also show that when the received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) is high, NOMA can achieve higher throughput gain compared with Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) due to the optimization of power split among users for NOMA case and the limitation on modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that can be used for OMA case. The maximum gain is 95 % (Indoor experiments) and 120 % (Outdoor experiments), respectively. On the other hand, we also clarify that the use of cross-polarized antenna configuration is effective to improve the NOMA gain compared with co-polarized antenna configuration since the fading correlation of co-polarized antenna is higher and the transmission rank is limited to 1.
