Effect of adding blue or yellow sectors to Benham's top on induced color -- In case of varying lightness and saturation in colored sectors --

(in English) The S and (L+M) cone opponent color mechanism is responsible for the yellowish apparent color seen at the transition of black to white and the bluish color at the black to white transition when Benham's top is spun. To better understand this mechanism, we investigate the effects of varying the lightness and saturation of yellow and blue sectors set at the transition edges by paired comparisons in the viewing condition that places the fixation at the center of the rotating disk. Experiments demonstrate that adding a pair of blue and yellow sectors with relatively high saturation, leads to enhancement or attenuation of induced colors depending on the configuration of the color sectors. The results suggest that S cones have faster response than (L+M) cones in the opponent color system which is the reverse of the response in the luminance system.
