Optimum Packet Length in an Intermittently Available Channel

(in English) Nowadays, techniques are developed that communication services are
provided based on information exchanged among devices when they can
communicate each other, e.g., vehicle-to-vehicle and road-to-vehicle
communications. In this kind of communications, the time interval
length during which the channel is available without interruption is
uncertain due to the mobility of devices. Because packets being
transmitted at the channel interruption are lost, the amount of lost
data increases with the packet size. On the other hand, if the packet
size is small, the overhead of the packet header becomes not
negligible and we cannot use the channel efficiently. In this paper,
taking account of the header length, we discuss the optimal packet
length in an intermittently available channel in terms of the expected
amount of successfully transferred data, given the probability
distribution of interval lengths during which the channel is available
without interruption.
