[Invited Lecture] Fundamental Study on Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging by Using Millimeter Wave Automotive Radar

(in English) In recent years, safety driving support sensors have been developed to decrease motor accidents. Especially, applications of a millimeter wave radar are attracted attention because it have various advantages in comparison with those of a camera and a laser. However, most of the radars detect only hazardous events between vehicles, and only detect distance to the objects. To make the radar system more intelligent, imaging radar system should be introduced to monitor the surroundings of the automobile. The synthetic aperture radar imaging by using a millimeter wave automotive radar is a method which deals with the problem. This article proposes the SAR imaging by using the millimeter wave automotive radar, and provides a fundamental study of the required parameters to realize the imaging for the objects diagonally in front of the automobile. In addition, experimental results are shown to verify the imaging performance of the radar.
