(事前公開アブストラクト) A series of Visual World Paradigm eye-tracking experiments investigates whether adults
and young children can predict an upcoming head of a compound by exploiting the
pitch accent information on the modifier constituent that precedes the head. Our recent
experiment on adult speakers (Hirose & Mazuka, 2015) demonstrated that the
compound structure in Japanese can be predictively constructed prior to hearing the
head noun if the prosodic information on the preceding modifier constituent signals that
the Compound Accent Rule (CAR) is being applied. We then conducted the same Visual
World Paradigmexperiment on 6-7 years old children and compared the time course of
the effects between the adult and the children groups using the nonparametric statistical
testing (Maris & Oosternveld 2007; vonHolzen & Mani 2012). We found evidence for
the anticipatory processing of compounds in children as well as in adults, although the
processing advantage in arriving at the semantic content was limited in children
compared to adults. We also found that the anticipatory effect was delayed by about
400ms compared to that of adults. |
