[Encouragement Talk] How high is the floor? Floor Height Estimation Based on Mobile Phones with Sensor Data

(in English) We have undertaken research and development with the objectives of making cellular coverage distinctly visible and identifying a coverage problem such as coverage holes based on gleaned coverage information, i.e., location information and radio quality information, from mobile terminals. In order to efficiently realize the above objectives, the three-dimensional location information is required rather than the two-dimensional perspective of latitude and longitude. Therefore, we studied a method to estimate the indoor floor level of a mobile terminal equipped with a barometric pressure sensor. In the method, first, the height of the physical location of the terminal from the ground is estimated using both barometric pressure as measured by the terminal and the base pressure as a reference. The base pressure is the barometric pressure at ground height close to the terminal. The base pressure estimate is based on a large number of barometric pressures from many mobile terminals. Then, the floor level is estimated by dividing the height from the ground by a pre-determined floor height, i.e., the height between the floors. However, the estimated floor height actually depends on each building. Therefore, the error of an estimated floor becomes large if the difference between the actual and the pre-defined floor heights is large.
Thus, in this paper, we present a method to estimate the height of a floor. The method applies the difference method to a frequency distribution of heights from the ground in a building in order to detect a floor face. The height between the floor faces is regarded as the floor height. Through a preliminary experiment using a smartphone, we found that the method has the potential to estimate the floor height accurately.
