Temporal aspects of numerosity perception of simultaneous talkers
Takayuki Kawashima (THU)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Temporal characteristics of numerosity judgments of simultaneous talkers were examined. First, a possible role of temporal fluctuations of signal to noise ratios in a mixed speech signal was evaluated. A mixed speech signal often contains intervals that preserve an almost intact constituent signal, due to large fluctuations of envelopes inherent to speech. During numerosity judgments, listeners might perceive each talker utilizing these intervals. Results of analysis of data did not support the prediction. Second, a role of temporal duration of a mixed speech signal was examined and the duration was manipulated in four conditions (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 s) during the numerosity judgments. Results suggested that correct numerosity judgments for multiple voices require the duration of a mixed speech to be longer than 0.2 s.
